DTI Summer Workshop Series 2010
DTI students can take advantage of our Summer Workshop Series which is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, June 1st. These workshops can be used by students as a means to test out of a class, get a better grade in a class for which they are currently enrolled, or prepare for a class which they will take in a coming semester.
Both Math and English/Writing workshops are offered, and the sessions will be led by Jacquelyne Brafford and James Ross. The math workshops will be separated into lower-level (afternoon) and upper-level (morning) sections, and there will be one English/writing section. Each workshop session will last approximately two hours (there will be a fifteen minute break between each hour). Workshop sections will convene twice per week, and students will not be responsible for purchasing any books or worrying about homework. The only things students should bring with them would be paper and pencil---handouts, study guides, and exercises will be provided.
If you think you might be interested in participating, please speak with your Case Manager or Peer Mentor ASAP in order to complete the necessary sign-up paperwork (don't worry, it's quick and painless)! Please call us at (303) 556-2461 to schedule an appointment.
The workshop schedule is as follows: Tuesday, June 1st through Thursday July 8th
Upper-level Math Workshop: (college algebra, trigonometry, calculus)
Mondays & Wednesdays - 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Lower-level Math Workshop: (remedial math, algebra)
Mondays & Wednesdays - 2:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Spotlight on the International Studies Major

This major offers students the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of complex international issues and the forces that are shaping our world.
Audrey Santos and Band, "Santoya", Release Their First Single!

Santoya is the newest band in the local music scene in Denver, and they are beginning to make a name for themselves with their fresh sound and classic approach to creating music. For the incomparable duo, music takes on a form that is not easily found in a lot of musical acts today - music becomes a form of expression and invokes a multitude of emotions and memories.

Congratulations to DTI's Mysti Casias for Earning the Reisher Scholarship!
Mysti is a very academically gifted student in the Reisher Scholars Program. She grew up in North Denver and was raised by her grandparents. Mysti is a low-income, Hispanic, single mother, and despite having her first child at 16, she was able to overcome the odds and become successful in her academic career. Her first child is now 15-years-old, a daughter named AJexis. She also has a four-year-old son. She hopes to finish college at the University of Colorado Denver with at least a 3.5 GPA. While she is completing her degree, she will be studying for the LSAT (on which she hopes to score at least 165). If she gets at least a 165, she will be considering Berkeley Law School to work on her professional degree in family law. She says if she does not do too well on her test, she will use her Bachelor's degree to pursue a job in the field of forensic psychology.

DTI SERVES IN THE COMMUNITY

On January 14th, the Denver Transfer Initiative family volunteered at the Denver Rescue Mission, located at 1130 Park Avenue West in Downtown Denver. We helped prepare and serve lunch and dinner to the community, and snuck a few bites ourselves! The staff at the Rescue Mission was even kind enough to give the DTI family a tour of the house. DTI hopes to continue to volunteer in the community throughout the semester and create relationships that will lead to greater opportunities!

Thinking About Law School?
If you plan on applying to law school in the future, you're going to have to take that LSAT placement exam at some point. The test can be tricky, and prep-courses can deplete your bank accounts, but the Auraria Pre-Law Society has developed the first affordable LSAT course of its kind on our campus. The course will be offered twice a week starting in March to prepare students for the June LSAT.
LSAT classes normally run up to $1500, but the LSAT course we've developed will cost only $175. It will be an 8-week, 24-hour class (plus several hours of practice exams) - taught by an instructor who scored in the 99th percentile on this test.

Loans Defined: Am I Getting My Money's Worth?
Federal Stafford Loans are student loans that must be repaid and are available to both undergraduate and graduate students. There are two types: Federal Direct Loans (Direct Loan) and Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL).
• If it is a subsidized Stafford Loan (demonstrated need for the loan), you
are not responsible for interest while attending at least half-time and the principle is deferred.
• If it is an unsubsidized Stafford Loan (financial need was not demonstrated) the principle is still deferred but you are responsible for paying interest on the loan.
Federal PLUS Loans are available to parents of dependent undergraduate students who are enrolled at least half-time. The PLUS Loan is also available to graduate and professional degree students. Financial need is not a requirement.

Rock the Spring '10 Semester!
Welcome back, students! As the spring semester of 2010 approaches, your friends at DTI would like to offer a few pointers to help you start your term with a bang. Keep in mind that classes begin on Tuesday, January 19, 2010. If you’re still waiting with bated breath to find out what your financial aid award for the semester will be, you should be informed during the week of January 11. For most scholarships, unfortunately, it may take several weeks or sometimes even months to hear anything back.
Also, remember to get a new student ID if you’re transferring to UC-Denver this term. Once you have registered, first go to the Bursar's office with your new schedule to get a coupon for a free student ID. Then visit the ID center in Tivoli 269 with your current schedule in order to obtain your new official school ID. Here you can also access light rail pass stickers for the spring semester. If you are unfamiliar with the student union, your DTI peer mentor will be happy to assist you.
