Midterm Study Skills
Many people approach studying from a passive standpoint. They read their textbook, attend lectures, and even go over their notes, however, they do nothing with the information. Instead they are passive learners. Effective learners tend to re-organize the information in a way that makes sense to them, and have learned to become active learners.

Haunted Harvest
The annual Haunted Harvest at Auraria Campus is a creative competition located in the historic 9th Street Park. Every October, the houses are transformed into an array of creations with decoration, trick-or-treaters and fun. CCD Student Life judges each house based on creativity and originality; we slightly missed out on winning the grand prize last year, and we would love DTI members to help participate in planning, decorating and attending this free family-friendly event. Feel free to stop by DTI as early as possible to learn more about participating in the October 29th event, or contact Andrew Grant at andrew.grant@ccd.edu.

Faculty Academy Highlights
The DTI Faculty Academy is wrapping up a successful project year. Here are some highlights of the faculty development workshops and related to student success with numerous nationally-recognized higher education experts.
• In March 2009, Nobel Prize Winner, Dr. Carl Wieman discussed using the scientific approach to teach science and other disciplines. His message to faculty included the limits of pure lecture-based teaching and how to best engage students in the learning process.

POTLUCKS AND PATHWAYS
This is the potluck of all potlucks. This potluck will work like normal—everyone brings one dish and shares with everyone else—but there are some additional bonuses to the typical smorgasbord of food. At this summer’s potluck on July 15th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., we are eating food, playing games, getting to know others at DTI and sharing thoughts.
If you’re interested in joining in the DTI atmosphere, join our potluck Wednesday, July 15th.

New UCD Learning Communities
UC-Denver will be hosting two different learning communities in the Fall semester of 2009. The first learning community is designed to meet the needs of students who have recently transferred to UC-Denver. The learning community will consist of a MGMT 3000 course and MGMT 3111 which is a transfer seminar 1 credit hour course. Students in this learning community will have the same instructor for both MGMT courses. The other learning community will be HIST 1362, American History since 1876. This course is designed for CCD students who are interested in taking a course with a UC-Denver instructor. Registration for both courses is taking place at the transfer success center. Stop by and see your case manger today to register.

Math Workshop
The Denver Transfer Initiative’s Summer Math Workshop Series has provided math students with an opportunity to improve their mathematical skills, regardless of their level, through both group and one-on-one tutoring over a six-week period. The hope for the workshop series is that participating students will then take the ACCUPLACER exam and successfully test up from or out of their current math classes.

Student Employee of the Month
DTI was honored to welcome Allison Lambert into its community as a UCD Peer Mentor in January, 2009. Since then Allison has showered both her co-workers and caseload with enthusiasm and innovative ideas in regard to improving DTI students’ academic experiences. It is for these reasons that we are proud to feature her as our Student Employee of May, 2009.

DTI Spring Potluck
This spring kicked off a series of many joyful DTI happenings and events this season. In celebration of Maria Gomez’s marriage, Claudia Cardenas’s new baby, and the birthdays of Juan Sanchez and Jessica and Isella Galvan, the Denver Transfer Initiative held a Potluck lunch for friends and family in which there was plenty of delicious food and fun to go around.
DTI's First-Ever UCD Graduate - Jorge Shols
May 16th marks an important day for DTI: Jorge Shols is graduating with a B.S. in Psychology. He is the first DTI student to complete his bachelor’s degree. For anyone who has yet to be graced with Mr. Shols’s acquaintance, he is a shining example of what education can do for you. A well-spoken man and an analytical thinker, Jorge is interested in social psychology—that is, studying social issues and understanding how people think about the world around them.

Transfer Club Update!
The gavel struck, and our first official meeting had concluded. Actually, we adjourned to the tapping of a ball-point pen, but the lift off of the Transfer Club was successful. We had over nine feet of delicious Subway sandwiches, and many happy attendants. We re-introduced our club: we aim to create a community for transfer students by supporting academic success and by increasing campus and community involvement. We are a student run organization serving students and the community. At our meeting on Wednesday, April 29th, we officially passed the torch to the next generation of students. Izeal Hill and Jeremy Fox are serving as our UCD President and Vice-President. We have a lot of work to do over this summer, but keep your ears open for more news…

Congratulations, CCD Graduates!
The Denver Transfer Initiative is very proud of the 40 students set to graduate from the Community College of Denver on Wednesday, May 13th. Parents, spouses, relatives, and friends will be watching as our graduates complete an academic milestone, which opens the door to new endeavors and possibilities. Each person’s experience after graduation will be different, but what all DTI CCD graduates have in common is that they will embark on an entirely new journey upon transferring to the University of Colorado Denver. For this we applaud them, as they are creating more opportunities and chances for success in their future ventures. Congratulations to our Spring of 2009 graduates!
The Center for Academic Support and Achievement will be holding a fun and individualized pre-graduation ceremony on Tuesday, May 12th at Saint Cajetan’s Cathedral from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
